COVID-19 (coronavirus): Monitoring the situation and the preventive measures taken by the RTL

The RTL is following developments with the COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic on our territory very closely. Our staff is in constant contact with the Centre intégré de santé et de services sociaux de la Montérégie-Centre, the healthcare institution that covers the territory served by the RTL, to assess the situation and implement all measures needed to protect the RTL’s users and employees.

The Direction de la santé publique (DSP) de la Montérégie Centre has informed us that someone at the RTL has tested positive for COVID-19. The employee, a bus driver working in downtown Vieux-Longueuil, stopped working on March 15 and was subsequently placed in isolation by the RTL’s Bureau de santé. ​

Measures taken

The RTL is working closely with the DSP to identify employees who were in contact with this person. The DSP will contact these employees to take the appropriate measures, depending on their condition, and the RTL will be informed whether it must take any action involving them. As per the directives from the DSP, we will not release any details about the bus routes this person worked on.

We wish to remind our users that, according to the DSP, the risk of contracting the infection from public transit is low. The coronavirus can only survive for three hours on dry surfaces, and we have stepped up cleanings of all high-touch surfaces (see below for the measures taken to prevent the spread of COVID-19 to our employees and users). Our facilities
New measures have been put in place at the Longueuil terminal ticket counter:
  • Payment by debit and credit card is preferred when purchasing transit passes;
  • Opus card purchase and reload terminals have been installed in front of the counters;
  • Markings on the ground in the waiting line indicate the physical distance required between each user;
  • The benches near the ticket counter are now out of order, in order to comply with government guidelines on physical distancing.
At the Longueuil terminal
In order to continue following government guidelines on physical distancing, the restaurant tables have been removed from the Longueuil terminal. Also remember that loitering and gatherings are prohibited in the terminal.

Following yesterday’s announcement by the Québec government, the RTL wishes to inform users that it is considered an essential service, like all other transit corporations in Québec. This means that we will continue to operate.

Our buses
To minimize the risk of transmission of the virus for our drivers, boarding and disembarking will now be done through the back door of the bus, with the exception of customers with reduced mobility or with special accessibility needs. who can continue to use the front door ramp.

Paratransit service
In response to the COVID-19 pandemic and orders from the Québec government, new measures are being implemented in relation to our paratransit service to prevent the spread of the virus:
  • The paratransit taxi service will be limited to two users at a time;
  • Users with flu-like symptoms are asked not to use the RTL’s services and to cancel their trips;
  • There will be no pick-ups or drop-offs at gatherings of 250 or more people;
  • Paratransit service providers are asking employees who are returning from a trip to self isolate for 14 days as a preventive measure;
  • Minibus paratransit service providers will clean high-touch surfaces once a day (poles, straps, handrails, door handles, armrests, driver dashboard and steering wheel);
  • Paratransit taxi, sedan and van service providers will clean their vehicles once or twice a day, paying special attention to door handles and other high-touch surfaces. 
We encourage you to cancel all non-essential trips.
Unsued transit passes
Our bus network and our shared taxi, paratransit and RTL à la demande services are continuing to operate. Our priority is to remain operational while minimizing the health risks to our users, employees, partners and providers.
We are mindful of our users’ concerns about unused transit passes, and we are working closely with the Autorité régionale de transport métropolitain (ARTM), the agency responsible for setting fares in the metropolitan area, to determine what can be done. This information will be updated shortly by the ARTM based on the duration and severity of the current situation. ​

Our network
To date, the RTL bus network, paratransit services, shared taxi service, and RTL à la demande continue to operate normally.
An emergency response committee has been formed to monitor the situation and implement the necessary measures – code yellow.

As a preventive measure, we have increased the frequency of our cleaning operations, in particular high-touch surfaces (straps, poles, chip card readers, payment boxes). Our teams will be cleaning these surfaces every two days and will also be cleaning driver areas more thoroughly.


The minibuses are cleaned thoroughly once a day, with particular emphasis on guardrails, seat belts and handles. 
The partners who operate our taxis clean the door handles once a day.
Our facilities
At the Longueuil terminal, our cleaning contractors will step up daily cleanings of bathrooms and high-touch surfaces in the terminal, such as automatic ticket dispensers, door handles, driver door control panels, and restaurant tables. They will also install hand sanitizer dispensers at the five entrances to the terminal.

To reduce the risk of infection with COVID-19, the RTL requires employees who are returning from a trip abroad to self-isolate for 14 days.

Hygiene practices

During a pandemic, it is important to apply recognized hygiene practices to reduce the risk of contracting and spreading the infection:
  • Wash your hands with soap and warm running water for at least 20 seconds.
  • Use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer if you do not have access to soap and water.
  • Practice hygiene measures when you cough or sneeze: 
    • your mouth and nose with your elbow to reduce the spread of germs.
    • If you use a paper tissue, discard it immediately and wash your hands afterwards.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth with your hands.
