Reaction to the 2022 provincial budget

RTL grateful to Québec government for $13.4 billion allocated to public transit

Longueuil, March 24, 2022 - The Réseau de transport de Longueuil (RTL) applauds the Québec government for the additional amounts allocated to emergency support for transit corporations, mobility improvements and paratransit services, among other things. Last Tuesday, Québec’s Finance Minister, Éric Girard, presented the new Québec Infrastructure Plan (QIP) 2022-2032, which allocates $13.4 billion to public transit. The RTL plans to use its share of the funding to create some much-needed financial stability in the wake of the decline in ridership caused by the pandemic.

“The RTL has seen a significant drop in fare revenues. And we’re doing everything in our power right now to welcome users back and expand our client base. Public transit is gradually picking up. This money will help the RTL maintain an optimal level of service in order to better meet needs, especially those of paratransit users. It will also directly support the leadership role we are hoping to play in the fight against climate change. Public transit is the economical and environmentally friendly alternative to solo car travel.

“This addition to the Programme d’aide d’urgence au transport en commun (PAUTC), funded by Québec and Ottawa, will allow us to continue dealing with the consequences of the health crisis and prepare for the future, which will be marked in 2022 by the launch of the first REM rides on our territory.”

– Geneviève Héon, Chair of the RTL Board of Directors
